The Coastal Bend of Texas embodies a rich cattle ranching heritage; while, at the same time, creating an equally rich cultural background that grew out of the world of ranching and the combined cultures of European, Celtic, Mexican, and African communities.

Compiled over a sixteen year period, Tales from the San’tone River Bottom continues the exploration of this unique and dying culture that began with Cryin’ for Daylight. This first volume of Tales explores the extraordinary and unusual character of the region of Texas. The book contains 238 photographs from as early as the turn of the century, 4 maps, 19 original illustrations, and a wealth of narratives from 148 contributors who give insight into the cultural background surrounding the area ranches. The second volume of Tales show the change in the Twentieth Century and how they adapted their lives to the world around them.

Louise S. OConnor has documented the 164-year-old culture by interviewing and photographing several hundred men and women who have spent their lives on the ranches of the Texas Gulf Coast.

Milams Revelation Cookbook is a legacy of food and knowledge from the black culture of the Texas Coastal Bend.

The black cooks of the Texas Coastal Bend created memorable food. There was not much for them to work with, but they used what they had to create nourishing, delicious meals. This food was eaten in cow camps, ranch dining rooms and in the homes of blacks and whites alike.

Wild plants, game and fish were in abundance in this area. This cuisine was created from the food available in this area in their time. What was available was plentiful, but the isolation of this still almost frontier culture limited the variety of foods for use in their kitchens.
